Chapter Six

Emotional and Psychological Abuse

“An abused can seem emotionally needy. You can get caught in a trap of catering to him, trying to fill a bottomless pit. But he’s not so much needy as entitled, so no matter how much you give him, it will never be enough. He will just keep coming up with more demands because he believes his needs are your responsibility, until you feel drained down to nothing.” -Lundy Bancroft

Abuse

Simply put, abuse is abuse, no matter the diagnosis of the abuser. No one behaves correctly in their relationships all the time. However, when a person deliberately hurts another person over and over again, it becomes abusive. Hence, abuse is a misuse of power intended to harm or control another person (GoodTherapy, 2019). Behaviors from others that focus on creating fear or a bad feeling about oneself are not appropriate (1800Respect, 2020).

Types of Abuse

Different forms of abuse have been generally recognized to occur within relationships. Four types of abuse exist (GoodTherapy, 2019; Jared Justice, 2019a; Lancer, 2020):

Physical Abuse: Involves the use of force against the victim. This includes punching, kicking, stabbing, shooting, slapping, biting, etc.
